Scholarships for Study Abroad

At the University of Fukui, in order that more UF students take opportunities to study overseas while studying in the university, we introduce various kinds of scholarships. Here is an overview of the main scholarships below.

Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)

Student Exchange Support Program (Scholarship for Short-term Study Abroad)

For students sent to overseas educational institutions, the Japan Student Services Organization offer a scholarship (repayment unnecessary) to support part of the cost of studying abroad. For applicants subject to this program, we require submission of necessary documents to confirm the qualifying conditions.

South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, etc.

China, Taiwan, Bangladesh, India, etc.

Qualifying Conditions

  • Students participating in UF short-term overseas training programs or exchange programs to academic exchange partner institutions/UMAP-USCO participating institutions.
  • Regular students currently studying at the University of Fukui who have Japanese nationality or permanent residence in Japan.
  • Students who have not received scholarships through this support program during the same fiscal year.
  • The previous year’s GPA of 2.3/3.0 or higher.
    (S/A×3) + (B×2) + (C×1) + (F/W×0)
    Total registered number of credits (including F/W)
  • Financial criteria (As a rule, based on the Japan Student Services Organization’s Type II Scholarship Payment Criteria)
  • Language ability (As a rule, over 400 on TOEIC , or GPA of English classes in the previous year to be 2.3/3.0 or higher, etc.)
  • If a student receives a scholarship separately for study abroad from another organization, then that monthly payment must not exceed the amount paid through this program. (Recipients of this scholarship cannot receive University of Fukui Support Grant for Overseas Training.)

*Recipients are obliged to submit a prescribed report on their return, and cooperate to a survey aimed at study abroad students.

University of Fukui Support Grant for Overseas Training

This is a support grant (repayment unnecessary) offered to those among the students sent overseas through University of Fukui who are excellent both in academic performance and personal character.

Amount of Support

If the studying abroad period is 6 months or more・・・¥150,000 regardless of destination
If the studying abroad period is less than 6 months・・・As below

Qualifying Conditions

  • Students participating in UF short-term overseas training program, the exchange program or a program in which course credits of the University of Fukui can be earned.
  • Regular students currently studying at the University of Fukui who have Japanese nationality or permanent residence in Japan.
  • Students who have not received this fund during the same fiscal year.
  • Students who start their studies abroad within the application period (April – September or October – March)
  • Students with the previous year’s GPA (based on total number of credits gained) of 2.3/3.0 or higher, and who meet the standard number of course units.
    (S/A×3) + (B×2) + (C×1)
    Total number of credits obtained (excluding F/W)
  • Students who have received a recommendation from their academic advisors.
  • If a student receives a scholarship separately for study abroad from another organization, the amount is \50,000 or less.

* Recipients are obliged to submit a prescribed report on their return.

Application Methods

Applicants are called for twice in a year and students apply at either time depending on their departure date. Application guidelines are to be distributed via the study abroad mailing list and posted on this website’s news, so make your application having checked the details yourself.

Fukui Asian Human Resources Fund

The Fukui Asian Human Resources Fund offers a loan to support students enrolled at universities within Fukui Prefecture in overseas study. After graduating from university, if you take employment at a company within Fukui Prefecture and have worked there for 3 years, you will be exempted from repayment of the loan.

Support Fund (Loan)

  1. (1) Travel costs, expenses to acquire visa ¥100,000
  2. (2) Living expenses, various costs to pay the host educational institution ¥50,000/month (up to 12 months in principle)

Lending Requirements (limited to around 30 students a year)

  • Students who are participating in more than 3 months of study abroad and come under any of the following:
    • Those that take regular courses in overseas universities
    • Those that take courses in overseas universities, and can transfer the credits to the home university.
    • Those that do overseas graduate school level research study, which is approved by the home university.
    • Those that take a language training program provided by the overseas educational institution, which is approved by the home university and a Certificate of Completion is to be issued at the end of the program.
  • At the time of application the applicant is between 18 and 35 and has Japanese nationality or comes under the relevant regulations.
  • Students enrolled at universities, junior colleges, technical colleges or graduate schools in Fukui Prefecture, or students who graduated from a high school within Fukui Prefecture and are enrolled in a university, junior college, technical college or graduate school in Japan but outside Fukui Prefecture (excluding new students taking the admissions test for working people)
  • Students who are willing to start working at a company with its headquarters in Fukui Prefecture by the end of April of the year following graduation from the home university (or graduate school), and intends to work there for more than 3 years.

Application Method

tobitateRead through the application guidelines posted on the web site below and submit a complete set of application documents to the International Affairs Division. Students can apply this loan only through the home university. The application may be accepted at any time throughout the year.

“Japan Public-Private Partnership Student Study Abroad Program – TOBITATE! Young Ambassador Program -”

This program provides scholarships and other aid to promote Japanese students study overseas, not only as a government initiative, but with the help of private-sector contributions. Upon application, students think of an original plan for studying abroad incorporating diverse activities such as internships and volunteer work, and successful applicants are decided through document screening and interview. Generous financial assistance, substantial trainings before and after studying abroad, and a dense exchange and network of successful applicants selected from all over the country make this program especially appealing.

Regards scholarships for study overseas in addition to the above, there are various options such as financial assistance by foreign governments, local authorities and private organizations and so on.
